Software developer mock interviews
A software developer interview is rarely one kind of question. The same hour moves from a problem to your project to "tell me about a time you disagreed with someone", and the switch between them is where candidates who prepared for only one kind lose their footing.

What a software developer round covers
Problem solving
One or two problems worked out loud: arrays, strings, hashing, trees. The approach and the complexity you state count as much as the code.
Fundamentals in your language
OOP, the collections you use every day, and the database basics behind your projects — asked as "why", so a memorised definition is only the start.
Your own work
A project or a feature from your current job, followed down to the decisions: why that structure, what broke, what you would change.
Behaviour and communication
Conflict, ownership, a deadline you missed. Real examples, told in order, with what you did rather than what the team did.
Software developer interview questions you might be asked
Not a list to memorise. Each is the kind of opening a real round uses, with what a strong answer covers — the follow-ups depend on what you say.
Given a list of transactions, find the first customer who made two purchases within a minute. Talk me through it.
Restate, take an example, start with the obvious approach and its cost, then improve it — a map from customer to last timestamp makes it one pass. Edge cases: equal timestamps, unsorted input.
Walk me through the most complex thing you have built. What would you do differently now?
The problem, your part, one hard decision and its trade-off, and a specific change — not "nothing" and not "everything".
Your API is returning the wrong data for some users only. How do you investigate?
Narrow it down before guessing: which users, since when, what changed. Logs, a reproduction, then the fix — and how you would stop it recurring.
Tell me about a time you disagreed with a teammate or a reviewer.
A real situation, what you thought and why, how it was settled, and what you learned. Showing you can be persuaded scores better than showing you won.
Explain a concept from your stack to someone who has not used it.
A test of communication as much as knowledge: start from what it is for, use one example, and check understanding instead of adding more jargon.
Answer questions like these in a scored round and see exactly where your answer fell short.
What the interviewer is listening for
Interviewers for a general developer role are checking range and consistency: whether the depth you show on a problem holds up when the question turns to your project or to how you work with people. A strong technical answer followed by a vague behavioural one reads as half a candidate.
Where candidates lose marks
- Preparing only problems, and having nothing specific to say about your own project.
- Answering behavioural questions with "we" all the way through.
- Naming technologies on your resume you cannot be questioned on.
Two ways to interview
A round with Sia, on your own
One question at a time with real follow-ups on what you actually said. Choose three, five or eight questions. Scored the moment you finish, with a written breakdown across technical depth, problem solving and communication.
A live interview with an engineer
Forty minutes over Zoom with someone who runs software developer interviews for a living. They score five criteria and write up what to fix, and you keep a numbered certificate for the session.
For a round with Sia, choose the Mixed round: technical and behavioural questions in one sitting. For a live interview, enter the role and stack you are interviewing for when you book, and the engineer reads them beforehand.
Questions about software developer interviews
Which round should I take for a software developer interview?
For a round with Sia, the Mixed round: technical and behavioural questions in one sitting, the way a general developer interview runs. If your interview is mostly one area, pick that track instead.
Can a live interview be a general developer interview?
Yes. When you book, you enter the role you are interviewing for and the technologies you use, and the engineer reads them before the session.
Is this right for freshers?
Yes. A round with Sia can be set to Beginner difficulty, and the interviewer works from the resume you attach, so questions come from your own projects.
How is a software developer round scored?
On the same five criteria as every round — technical depth, problem solving, communication, behavioural and code quality — so the breakdown shows which part of a mixed interview needs the work.
